More time indoors over the winter can make an office smell stale. Ample airflow and routine cleaning are necessary during winter to remove unpleasant odours and eliminate bacteria, germs, pollutants, and other harmful contaminants. In addition to airflow and cleaning, natural deodorizers can help minimize odours and contribute to a fresh-smelling workplace. Although many commercial products are available, we recommend using natural deodorizers for a greener office.

Baking Soda

Baking soda can be used to deodorize office sinks, garbage/compost bins, carpets, upholstery, fridges, microwaves, and dishwashers. Eliminate stale odours from commercial carpets and upholstery by sprinkling baking soda and letting it sit for some time before vacuuming. Combat smelly garbage bins by leaving a small amount of baking soda at the bottom of the bin. Get rid of microwave food odours by steam-cleaning with baking soda, vinegar, and lemon. Keep the communal office dishwasher smelling fresh by placing baking soda at the bottom and running a regular cycle. Stop lingering odours from stinking up the office kitchen by putting baking soda and vinegar down the drain. After letting it sit for a few minutes, run hot water.

Citrus Fruits

Citrus fruits have a bright and powerful scent that helps neutralize odours. Both their peels and juice can be used to eliminate foul odours. Wipe down surfaces with lemon juice to disinfect and leave a fresh aroma. Boil a mixture of citrus peels to absorb and trap stale odours. Fresh-cut citrus peels can also be placed in a bowl to alleviate strong odours. Try combining citrus fruits such as lemons, limes, grapefruits, and oranges to mask lingering odours.

Essential Oils

Some essential oils are advantageous for removing odours, including citrus, peppermint, eucalyptus, and lavender. They feature antiseptic properties that help neutralize odours rather than masking them. Use essential oils in a diffuser or place a few drops at the bottom of garbage bins to remove unpleasant odours. Essential oils can also be used on surfaces, but it is best to avoid putting them directly on countertops to prevent surface stains. Essential oils are ideal in entrances, bathrooms, and kitchens where first impressions matter.

White Vinegar

White vinegar has acidic properties that break down odours. It can be used to wipe surfaces, neutralize sink drains, remove fabric odours, and purify odours present in the air. Vinegar is a versatile cleaner/deodorizer and can be used in various ways, including in a spray bottle, a bowl, or boiled. White vinegar is very effective as a deodorizer when mixed with baking soda. They create a chemical reaction when combined that effectively banishes unpleasant scents. The baking soda reduces the smell of vinegar when mixed, making the vinegar more subtle.
